Visual Perceptual Skills

The seven skills, in plain language, with what each one looks like in ordinary life, how it shows up in a classroom when it is hard, and what actually helps. Written for parents and teachers rather than for a report.

What visual perception is

Visual perception is what the brain does with what the eyes send it. Eyesight is the camera. Visual perception is everything that happens to the picture afterwards: recognising it, comparing it, remembering it, working out where things are in relation to each other.

That distinction is the single most useful thing on this page. A child can pass an eye test with a perfect result and still find it genuinely hard to notice that two shapes differ, to find their coat on a crowded rail, or to recognise a letter written in an unfamiliar font. "The optician said her eyes are fine" and "she cannot find the word on the page" are both true at the same time, and they are not a contradiction.

The seven skills

Visual perception gets broken into seven skills, which is the grouping occupational therapists use and the one behind the Test of Visual Perceptual Skills, where each has its own subtest. The divisions are a convenience rather than seven separate machines in the head, but they are a useful convenience: they let you name which part of a task is the hard part.

Form constancy Recognising something as the same thing when its size, position, angle or font changes. Knowing that a, A and a handwritten a are all the same letter. Recognising your mug lying on its side.
Visual figure-ground Picking one thing out of a busy background. Finding your name on a class list. Finding the scissors in a full drawer. Following one line of text on a dense page.
Visual closure Recognising a whole thing from an incomplete view of it. Knowing what a half-hidden object is. Reading a word where the last letters are smudged. Recognising an animal from its outline alone.

The one most often talked about, and the one with the clearest link to early reading, is visual discrimination. There is a longer guide to it here, including a straight answer about letters written backwards.

What difficulty looks like in a classroom

Visual perceptual difficulty rarely announces itself. It usually turns up as a child who is working much harder than the result suggests, and it is easy to read as carelessness or as not trying. Things worth noticing:

  • Losing their place constantly when copying from the board, or when reading along a line.
  • Muddling letters that are similar shapes, well past the age at which that has settled for their classmates.
  • Handwriting where the spacing and the alignment are the problem rather than the letter shapes.
  • Taking a very long time to find one item on a busy worksheet or one book on a full shelf.
  • Avoiding jigsaws, drawing, construction and anything that involves searching a page, in a way that goes beyond preference.
  • Doing much better when the same task is presented with less on the page.

That last one is the most useful diagnostic thing a teacher can do without any tools at all. If cutting the page down to four items transforms the performance, the difficulty is in the looking rather than the knowing, and the accommodation is obvious and free.

Activities for each skill

Most of the good ones cost nothing and are already happening in the house.

Visual memory Kim's game: a tray of objects, look for ten seconds, cover it, name what was there. Remove one and ask what is missing.
Visual sequential memory Lay out three coloured bricks, cover them, ask the child to rebuild the order. Add a brick when it is easy.
Visual spatial relations Copying block patterns. Following a simple map or treasure hunt. Anything with in front, behind, above, between said out loud while doing it.
Form constancy Letter hunts in different fonts around the house: cereal boxes, road signs, book covers. Same letter, wildly different shapes.
Visual figure-ground I-spy in a busy picture book. Finding a named item in a full drawer. Highlighting one word every time it appears on a page.
Visual closure Guessing an object from a partial view. Silhouettes, which are visual closure and discrimination at the same time. Jigsaws with a piece missing.

What this can and cannot do

The overclaimed version: that visual perception worksheets prevent or treat reading difficulties. They do not, and the evidence for training visual perception as a route to better reading is genuinely mixed rather than settled. Practising visual comparison is useful groundwork, in the same way that being read to is useful groundwork. It is not an intervention.

The honest claim is narrower and still worth something: a child who is comfortable noticing that two outlines differ has one less obstacle when the outlines turn into letters. That is worth a few minutes of something the child enjoys. It is not worth buying a programme for, and it is not a substitute for teaching reading.

It is also worth knowing that reversing letters is ordinary in young children and usually settles by around seven or eight, and that dyslexia is mainly about processing the sounds in words rather than about seeing shapes backwards. That is covered properly here.

Who assesses it

Occupational therapists assess how a child uses what they see, usually with a standardised test. Optometrists assess the eyes themselves, and behavioural or developmental optometrists look at how the eyes work together. A school screening is often the quickest first step, and a teacher's observation over a term is worth a great deal.

Worth raising with someone if you see persistent difficulty finding things that are in plain sight, constant loss of place when reading along a line, reversals or matching difficulties that are not shifting at all across a school year, or a child who is visibly working much harder than their classmates for less result.
