Accessible Online Games for Disabled Children

Free games that run in a browser, built around the things that actually stop children playing: dragging, timers, losing, and instructions you have to be able to read. Take those away and a lot of children who were locked out can simply play.

The short answer

Accessibility here is not a badge, it is a list of things that were deliberately left out. No drag and drop. No timers. No score that goes down. No screen that says you lost. No text you have to read to know what to do. No age printed anywhere. No account, and no adverts sitting next to a child.

None of that is charity and none of it makes the games worse for anyone else. A game that a child with a tremor can play is also a game that works for a four-year-old on a bumpy car seat. The reason most free children's games fail is not that accessibility is hard, it is that nobody checked.

The barriers, and what was done about each

This is the honest version of the accessibility statement. Left column is the thing that stops children; right column is what this site does instead.

The decisions in detail

Dragging is the single biggest barrier, and it is usually unnecessary

Drag and drop asks a child to press, hold a steady pressure, move accurately across a screen, and release at exactly the right moment. That is four motor demands stacked on top of a task that was supposed to be about matching a shape. A child who knows perfectly well which animal the shadow belongs to can fail a dragging game entirely, and the game will record that as not knowing.

It is also invisible to switch and eye-gaze users, who have no equivalent of a sustained drag. The frustrating part is that almost no matching activity needs it. Tapping the answer conveys the same thing. So nothing on this site drags.

No timers, because speed is not the skill

A countdown converts every activity into a test of processing speed. For a child who needs an extra three seconds to scan four pictures, a timer does not measure whether they can do it, it measures how fast they are, and then tells them they are not fast enough. Nothing here is timed and nothing is scored against a clock.

No way to lose

When a wrong answer is chosen, the game says the name of what was picked, sets that option aside, and lets the child carry on with the ones that are left. The round always finishes with the child finding the right answer, because the game runs out of wrong ones.

That approach has a name and a body of practice behind it, and it is worth understanding if you work with a child who refuses after one mistake: errorless learning is the idea that for some learners, preventing the error beats correcting it.

Instructions are spoken, and written words are optional

Every instruction is read aloud, so a child who is not reading yet can play without an adult narrating over their shoulder. Separately, the written word under each picture can be turned on or off. On, and it is quiet reading practice. Off, and the picture stands alone with nothing to decode. Those are two different children and both settings are one tap away.

Keyboard and switch access

Every control is a real HTML button, which means Tab moves between them and Enter or Space presses them, with no custom key handling to learn. The focus outline is deliberately much thicker than the browser default, because a thin blue line is useless to an adult trying to see from across a table where a child is up to. If you are setting up a switch, the switch access page has the platform-by-platform steps and is straight about where the limits are.

Level, never age

You will not find "ages 3 to 5" on a game here. Children of the same age are nowhere near the same place, and the thing that decides whether an activity fits is how much it demands, not how old the person doing it is.

The harm is specific. A ten-year-old working on matching and early words is exactly who these activities suit, and handing them something stamped "ages 2 to 4" tells them, and tells whoever is sitting with them, that they are doing baby work. That is a long-standing and entirely fair complaint about special education materials, and it costs nothing to avoid. So the games move by level instead: two, three or four choices, words showing or hidden, wrong answers that are obviously different or annoyingly similar.

A note on language

This page says "disabled children" in some places and "children with disabilities" in others, and that is not carelessness. Different people prefer different things, strongly, and both are used in good faith here. Where a specific community has a clear preference, that preference is followed: most autistic adults prefer "autistic person" over "person with autism", so the autism page is written that way throughout.

The same principle runs through the design. The games are not built to make a child less disabled. They are built so that being disabled stops being the reason they cannot join in.

Which game to start with

All three are free, open straight into play, and need nothing installed.

  • Shadow Matching is the easiest entry point and the one to try first. A black silhouette on one side, real animal photographs on the other, find which one it belongs to. Start at two choices with the words hidden. It practises visual discrimination, and because the shadow is the actual photograph with the colour removed, the outline matches exactly rather than approximately.
  • Match Words to Pictures is the step up. A photo appears and the child taps the word that names it, or one button flips the direction so the word comes first. The difficulty lives in the wrong answers, which can be obviously different or a near miss.
  • Tic-Tac-Toe asks for almost nothing except taking a turn, with a dog and a cat instead of X and O. Two players on one device, or against the computer on a gentle setting that does not play to win.

If a screen is not the right tool, or the child does better at a table, the same photographs come as free printable worksheets that need only a pencil, and can be cut into cards for a child who finds pencil work tiring.

Setting it up on a school or clinic device

  • Nothing to log in or out of. A page can be opened on a shared tablet and handed to the next child without anyone signing out, because there is nothing to sign into.
  • Add it to the home screen. On a tablet, your browser's Add to Home Screen option gives the game its own icon and opens it full screen, with no address bar for a child to wander out of.
  • It keeps working offline. Once a game page has loaded, it does not need the network to keep playing, which is useful in a room where the wifi is not.
  • Set it before you hand it over. Number of choices, words on or off, sound, voice and size are all set from the settings row, and they stay put in that browser.
  • No advertising on game pages, so there is nothing inappropriate to appear next to a child and nothing to tap by accident.

What these are not

Being clear about this matters more on a page like this one than anywhere else on the site, because pages about disabled children are exactly where overclaiming happens.

These are practice activities. They are the kind of short, repeatable task a child can do a few times while you are nearby. They are not a therapy programme, an intervention, an assessment, a screening tool, a curriculum, or a treatment for any condition. Playing them will not make a child less autistic, will not treat ADHD and will not fix a reading difficulty, and anyone who tells you their matching game does any of that is selling something.

They are also not written by a clinician. Maggie Games is made by one independent developer, from a parent-and-teacher point of view. If you have concerns about a child's development, the people to talk to are your paediatrician, speech and language therapist or occupational therapist, all of whom have met the child, which no website has.

Common questions

What makes an online game accessible for a disabled child?

In practice it is a short list: no dragging, large targets, no time limit, no way to lose, instructions spoken as well as written, full keyboard operation, and animation that switches off when the device asks for it.

Most free children's games fail on the first three. That is what excludes the child, rather than anything about the child.

Are these games free, and do I need an account?

Free, no account, no download, and no advertising on the game pages. Nothing about the child is collected or sent anywhere: your settings are stored in that browser and nowhere else, which is why a shared classroom tablet does not need anyone to log in or out.

Can a child using a switch play these games?

Yes, through a switch interface set to send keyboard input, or through iOS Switch Control and Android Switch Access. Every control is a real button reachable by Tab and pressed with Enter or Space, and the focus outline is deliberately thick.

No. They are everyday practice activities, not a therapy programme, an assessment, an intervention or a treatment for any condition, and nothing here is written by a clinician.

Why are there no age labels on the games?

Because "ages 3 to 5" tells an older child working on early skills that they are doing baby work, which is a long-standing complaint about special education materials. The games are set by how much the task demands instead: how many choices, whether the words show, and how similar the wrong answers are.

My child has never managed a game like this before. Where do I start?

Shadow Matching, set to two choices with the written words hidden, for about two minutes. That is the smallest version of the task on the site: one shadow, two photographs, no reading, no clock, and no way to get it wrong for long. Move anything up only once it is easy.
